Les Tricheuses is an original acrylic and aerosol painting on 110x200cm canvas  by Louise Hapton.

Les Tricheuses by Louise Hapton playfully reimagines Caravaggio’s Les Tricheurs through a kawaii lens, turning a high-stakes deception into a mischievous tea party. The rich, saturated colors and expressive brushstrokes replace the drama of Baroque chiaroscuro with a sense of whimsy and theatricality. Inspired by fairytales and pop culture, the characters—reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland—engage in a game of trickery, blurring the lines between innocence and mischief. This piece invites the viewer into a surreal, dreamlike world where deception is playful, and art history meets contemporary storytelling.

This painting is from the "Alice cherche Alice" Series.

“Alice cherche Alice” is a vivid exploration of identity and self-discovery, inspired by Harajuku and Lolita fashion, folktales, and Alice in Wonderland. Combining painting and sculpture, the series reimagines Alice’s journey as a metaphor for navigating inner chaos and transformation.

The whimsical elegance of Lolita fashion—with its ruffles, bows, and doll-like aesthetic—meets the playful rebellion of Harajuku, blending innocence with unsettling distortions. The interplay of kawaii (cute) and kowai (creepy) runs throughout, where sweetness is tinged with unease, mirroring the tension between innocence and darkness. Folktales and Wonderland’s surreal logic shape the narrative, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur.

Through vibrant colors, layered textures, and dreamlike sculptural forms, the series invites viewers to reflect on their own fragmented identities and the universal search for self.
