“Deadly Magical Girls” is a ceramic and mixed media series by Louise Hapton that reimagines the iconic “magical girl” trope through a darker, more radical lens. Drawing from anime aesthetics, internet nostalgia, and girlhood symbolism, Hapton transforms her characters into powerful yet unsettling figures, glittering icons of vulnerability and rage.
 
These girls are not here to save the world in innocence, but to expose its violence and contradictions. With glossy finishes, sharp edges, and candy-colored palettes, their weapons seduce while threatening, embodying the duality of being sweet and dangerous, soft and lethal.
 
The series challenges how society projects purity onto femininity, and reclaims hyper-feminine aesthetics as tools of resistance, protection, and survival. Hapton’s magical girls don’t ask for permission. They weaponise cuteness, turning trauma into power.
