Maillot de bain
"Maillot de bain" is an original ceramic sculpture by Louise Hapton from her sculpture series "Hangers".
In "Hangers", the artist aims to explore intimacy on a whole new level. What is it to be a girl, a woman, or to be born with a female body? The weight we carry on our shoulders is somewhat similar to the weight of our breasts. We didn't choose it, but it's there. We as women own our underwear, but most of us don't own their own body.
By creating wall mounted sculptures of used underwear out of clay, Louise Hapton wants to express the fragility of the female image, female freedom and self-consciousness society forces them to have.
This very small swimsuit on this disproportionate hanger almost looks like a rare steak. It deals with the injonction of slenderness society sells to women with body-modifying underwear. We are constricted in our waist trainers, in our flattening belly swimsuits... just to become a product ourselves.
