Sunday in Soho
'Sunday in Soho' is one of the first pieces from the "A French in Britain" series.
In this series of ceramic artwork, Louise Hapton wants to show how she sees Britain through her eyes, meaning through the eyes of an immigrant. A French one. She wants you to see thhat after four years living here, her visison of London has evolved. The series will explore what it feels like to be an immigrant after Brexit in the UK, and how cultural and societal changes mold our vision of our surroundings.
This piece in particular deals with two clashing visions: the idealised London phonebox like in the movies seems radiant on the outside... but when you look closely, a pigeon has shat all over it, discarded bottles of wine and cans of beers litter it, and it smells of piss. The original title of this piece should've been "Piss in", but instead, the artist chose to make it more subtle for people who know about the ambiance and the stench of a Sunday morning in Soho, after the wild Saturday nights.
